Patrick Connelly

I am an artist currently working in the mediums of printmaking and filmmaking. Way back in 2007 I completed a BFA in Film Studies at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. I was drawn toward the direct camera-less animation technique (scratch films, hand painted films, etc) because of its tactile nature and simplicity, and have been working in this medium ever since. I’ve shown my short films in a handful of festivals domestically and internationally.

After film school I discovered linocut printmaking, and fell in love with it for similar reasons. Having also been greatly influenced by the atmospheric lighting and style of crime films from the 1940’s and 50’s, my linocut prints came to naturally evoke that look. Making these film themed linocut prints has been a way of celebrating the characters and style of the films that I spent so much time with, and feel deeply connected to.

In September 2022 I received the Pratt / Seattle Print Arts Scholarship Grant. I’ve used this opportunity to explore new printmaking techniques such as collograph, letterpress, and monotype. My goal has been to combine the techniques of filmmaking and printmaking, and to examine the relationship and similarities between these two hands on mediums.
