Artist Spotlight: Fin’es Scott

Our newest gallery artist, Fin’es Scott is the recipient of Columbia City Gallery’s Inaugural BIPOC Scholarship. Her work will be featured in the “Bold Visions” exhibit opening next week. Artist Reception is Saturday, Feb.10 from 5-7pm.

How long have you been a CCG Member artist?

• Since January 2024. Before becoming a member, I was a CCG gift shop artist from about 2012 onward.

Favorite Seattle neighborhood

• South Seattle, in general, is my favorite.

Favorite Seattle restaurant and/or neighborhood bar. Favorite item on their menu?

• Umami Kushi Bakery on Rainier. I love the beef curry Okazu Pan.

Favorite Seattle park

• Kubota Gardens.

Favorite style of house

• Northwest Modern.

Favorite museum/galleries

• The National Museum of African Art.

Who would play you in the movie of your life?

• I don’t have a particular actor in mind, but it would be important to me that she was an up-and-coming actress.

Are you an avid collector of anything?

• I wouldn’t call myself a collector, but I do own over 20 pairs of scissors. Including electric, pinking, snips, fabric, and paper scissors, to name a few.

What emoji do you use most often?

• The melty smiley face is by far the most I’ve used lately.

What is the last book you read?

• Speculation by Nisi Shawl. I’m a huge fan of Black speculative fiction, sci-fi, and fantasy.

What is the best advice you ever received?

• Rest is not a privilege. Rest is a human right. I don’t have to earn rest. – Tricia Hersey

Do you work better in the morning or at night?

• Night. I get so much work done during the quiet hours of the night.

Favorite studio tool?

• My sewing machine and Wacom tablet. Both are essential to my art practice.

Favorite artists?

• Bisa Butler, Leila Rose Fanner, Yinka Shonibare, Faith Ringgold, Kehinde Wiley, and Nick Cave.

What is your favorite medium, and why?

• Textile art and illustration are my favorites. Both skills have been with me for a long time.

How do you define success as an artist?

• Success for me as an artist is if Black women can see themselves reflected in my art and my art brings them joy.
