Artist statement:
I began exploring clay in 1997 at a community center in Boulder, CO. Over the years, my journey led me from student to apprentice and occasional instructor at Clayworks in Binghamton, NY, where I experimented with high fire reduction, wood-firing, soda firing, Raku, and pit/sawdust techniques. After relocating to the Pacific Northwest, I focused on creating functional ware on the wheel, altering wheel-thrown forms to produce unique pieces.
For the past four years, my focus has been on the horsehair Raku technique. This involves forming a piece, applying and polishing a fine slip called terra sigillata, then firing it twice—once in a regular kiln and once in an outdoor Raku kiln at 1100°F. During the second firing, horsehair is applied to the hot piece, creating dynamic, random black patterns that embody the Raku philosophy of “happiness by chance.” These beautifully random markings can never be totally controlled, and the results must simply be accepted as a gift bestowed by the elements.
My passion for horsehair Raku lies in its mysterious and captivating nature. I embrace the challenge of leaving my work to the randomness of the elements and have added new twists, like using mica powders for a shimmery surface. This ancient technique continues to inspire my creative pursuits.
