Miwa Gardner

Painting Subtle Emotions

Originally from Japan, Miwa Gardner has also lived in Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, and Munich, — places that shaped how she observes people and emotions.

Growing up in Japan as someone who looked visibly foreign (gaijin) yet carried Japanese heritage, Miwa often felt eyes on her. This experience heightened her sensitivity to kuuki wo yomu — the Japanese phrase for reading the atmosphere — noticing what was unspoken or hidden. That way of seeing continues to guide her work today. Her portraits often explore quiet, unspoken emotions — fleeting expressions that might otherwise slip by. Watercolor allows her to stay open and responsive, letting feelings surface naturally in the process. Each painting becomes a meditation between the visible person and their inner world. Rather than simply depicting likeness, Miwa draws into subtle gestures and expressions, inviting viewers to slow down and notice the layers of emotion. The fluidity of watercolor mirrors her own adaptability, allowing her to channel those unspoken feelings onto paper.

Her work holds space for those quiet, profound moments where true feeling resides — unveiling what is often hidden and offering a gentle reminder of our shared humanity and the instinctive nature we all carry beneath the surface.
