Linda James

My wish as a visual artist is to achieve with color what a musician can do with sound.

I have always been intrigued by indigenous art forms, including Tantric meditative art, Indonesian ikat, and Aboriginal dot paintings. There is a spiritual content in all of these art forms that unifies them. It is that focused intent that influences much of my work in watercolor.

Exploring the emotional and spiritual vibration of color has also been a focus, ever since I saw my first Mark Rothko painting in 1967. The Color Field painters of the 60s and 70s had a profound influence on me. My painting process is intuitive and responsive to imagery as it manifests on the paper, but what really moves me is how colors feel as they merge, combine or react with each other.

Besides being an artist and educator, I am also an herbalist, having apprenticed with two herbalists in the 1990s. My work with plants has caused me to be tuned into the unseen vibrational energies within and around all sentient beings. Therefore, it is natural for me to view color in the same context in my art. There is a strong vibrational relationship between color and music. My wish as a visual artist is to achieve with color what a musician can do with sound. I expect it to be a lifelong pursuit.

I have been an instructor at Gage Academy of Art since 2016 and also teach individual and group watercolor classes in my studio in Seattle.
