Karen Dedrikson

Birds, trees and untamed landscapes, their spirit, are my favorite themes.

Being in the moment is the heart of Sumi-e. Originating from Ancient Japan, it’s a way of painting black ink on paper. Mulberry, Shuan and Unryu are some of my favorite papers-each paper absorbs ink in unique ways. How I touch my brush to the soft white surface is a balance of serendipity and skill.  Once dried, I may add nuances of acrylic, oil bar or foil. This is a distinctive feature of my work, a way of suggesting the textures of nature and a way of creating a dynamic contrast with ink.
